Where the Heart Wants to Be (Obi/Sabe)
Title: Where the Heart Wants to Be

Somewhere between Canon and AU

Obi-Wan , Sabe, baby Luke

Disclaimer: The characters etc belong to GL.

Author’s Notes: Inspired by the Ladies of the Evening Challenge. Obi-Wan has to make a decision that he really doesn’t like. Sabe is doing something she does not want to be doing. Now the question is will the force keep Obi-Wan from having to give up his code of honor and will Sabe get the help she needs in order to quit doing what she does for her baby’s sake, or is the baby actually hers. This is also a twist on how Luke gets to Tatooine. I tried to keep Obi-Wan's character more towards the canon/moive side of the spectrum.

I decided to approach the challenge in a slightly different way. I wanted to show how someone comes to the decision of being a Lady of the Evening and why a Jedi such as Obi-Wan would go to one.

Thanks to Lady Kenobi with the title.

I started this in August 12 2004 over at TFN and I have started to work on it again. ( link to original posting.

The sound of humming could be heard in the air in the early dawn. A shimmering length of green could be seen against the two suns as the rose from the horizon. A man with reddish, brown hair that was streaked with grey was moving a light saber in measured patterns. As he performed these patterns he reflected on the previous night.

He gathered some supplies from the pantry and went about creating a meal. Chuckling to himself, he thought about the days when his master or apprentice could not get him near a kitchen, unless it was to eat. Now days he took pleasure in performing this simple task. His only regret that there was no one to share this task or the final outcome of this task with, unless he included his imagination. Chuckling to himself again, he thought how when he was very lonely for someone to converse with, he would talk to his imaginary companions as if they were really there with him. Sometimes, it would be the Jedi council, Yoda, Mace, Bant, Siri, Qui-Gon, and his former apprentice Anakin, who after he left the order became a Sith, that he would talk to. Nothing wrong with speaking to imaginary people, and it helped to keep a mind sharp and strong, when you are in the circumstances he was in.

He reflected on how he left the order in shame, when his apprentice fell to the dark side and how everyone at the Temple gave him the cold shoulder, believing it was his fault that Anakin fell to the dark side. He couldn’t even walk out side the Temple, without people staring and pointing at him, whispering behind his back saying’ That’s General Kenobi, he is the reason the Jedi are being killed by Lord Vader and why we live in this dictatorship galaxy. People would throw things at him and he even had assassination attempts made on his life. He could not even visit some of his friends, who were still loyal to him and did not believe it was his fault, for fear of endangering their lives. He eventually decided that it was best that he left the order, and it seemed the Jedi council couldn’t get him out the door fast enough. At first he went to live in the underground of Coruscant, but it wasn’t long before he begun to hear rumors that Lord Vader would spare any Jedi that brought him Obi-Wan Kenobi. He knew that there would be some Jedi who would take advantage of this offer, so he decided that it was time to leave the planet and go somewhere that Vader would not look. The biggest problem was how to get off the planet without anyone knowing; He was too well known to be able to get aboard an outbound ship under an assume name. He was on his way back to his little hideout in the underground thinking about his problem, when someone grabbed him and pulled him down an alley, he struggled with his attacker, but eventually he had been knocked out. He had later woken up to find Bail Organa sitting in a chair waiting for him to wake up. Bail had explained that he had heard of what was going on and had made plans to help his friend off the planet, and had found a place on Tatooine where Obi-Wan could live in a small hut, close to the wastelands, under the name Ben Kenobi.

Sighing to him-self, if he was at fault for Anakin’s fall, then only history would tell. While he believed that he had done everything he could for Anakin, there might have been more, but he didn’t know what. Noticing that the pasta was almost finished cooking, he decided that he needed to talk to his special companion tonight. His special companion was a female that over time he had perfected in his mind, that he could talk with, laugh with, tell his awful jokes and get a laugh, watch a holovid with, basically everything that he would do if he really had a live woman living with him, every detail was picture perfect in his mind on what that woman was like, right down to what was under her clothes. Chuckling to himself, some would say he was crazy maybe even insane and they would be right in some ways. He had become crazy; living alone did that to a man even if he is a Jedi. Whenever he decided that it was special companion night, he took great pains to set the table with two place settings. He lit the candles and put on some soft soothing music from a holoplayer. The sound of an ocean filled the air. He served the food and sat down and began his dinner conversation with his “woman”.

After dinner he and his “woman” went into the tiny living room and sat on the couch to watch the only holovid he had that was not broken or scratch. It was about a young padawan falling in love with a lady who worked in one of those “house of ill repute”, and how they had to keep it a secret from the council. It was a movie filled with double entredes and by the time it was over with, he felt the need to retire to his bedroom for some quality time with force.

He clipped the light saber to his belt and sat down under the shade of his lean-to, with his arms on his knees and his chin on his clasped hands, he compilated the events of last night. This need he had for companionship did not go away after some time with the force as it usually did. Time to go and seek some companionship in town. He sighed he hated going into town, unless he absolutely had to for several reasons. One being that he didn’t want anyone to recognize him and send word to the troopers, he still had a large bounty on his head and all it took was for someone having seen a wanted poster and his banther was cooked. Another reason was he didn’t like the crowds.. But this need was not going away and it was very strong. Usually when away on missions, it didn’t bother him much and when it did, usually could handle it by mediating in the force and it would go away. Upon occasion he would have to seek other means, but he could count those times on one hand. This was not something he wanted to do.

Unlike his fellow jedi years ago, who would go to houses of ill repute, or seek a lady of the streets, and pay for the umm companionship, he could never bring himself to pay for the companion ship, it went against his personal code of honor. It was not something that he could explain; it was just the way he was. He also felt that this was a personal matter and it was well known that some of these ladies would brag about whom they had umm dealings with. It gave them a sense of importance to their way of thinking among themselves. He knew that there were places where one could go and the business matters would stay there and not among the gossip mills. But still it was paying for it that really bothered him. Besides, when he was on missions after missions, he would use the force to ease his need, not to mention he got plenty of exercise with light saber training, and chasing wayward padawans. When those rare occasions occurred that he needed more than the force, he would seek out a widow, who thru the force he felt needed some companionship also but would not accept any payment nor would she sleep with a man who would insult her by offering to pay. Also the widow would be discreet because she didn’t want anyone to know her business either. There had been a couple of times when he and his very close friend Siri would help each other also when the need was too strong and they were on a mission, and even had been caught a couple of times in the most unwelcome times.

Chuckling, he remembered that they were on a mission to a planet that had very sensual beliefs and those people did not hide their sensuality at all. They wore very short tunics, including the men, and would ease the need at the drop of a hat, any hat, to protect a couple of royal kids who had a tamed nexus for a pet. After several nights and days of having to be around this atmosphere, they both felt the need for a companion and so they had retired to Siri’s bedroom after the kids were asleep, and so things were just about to come to a climax, when he felt something licking his barefoot, and since he was looking down into Siri’s eyes, it was not her. Another time they had been in his quarters in the temple and both of their padawans were having a few hours off from training, when right at the optimum moment, the door to his room open to reveal Master Yoda, and their two padawans. This caused a very embarrassing moment for Obi-wan. Neither Siri nor he had heard the door buzzer and so Master Yoda and the padawans were worried. Master Yoda had turned to the padawans and said “Tango, this is called, not allowed to do padawans, until knighted and know how to lock doors” They were teased unmercifully for weeks by the padawans after that.

He also had another rule, he never asked the woman for companionship, fully believing that if the force wills for him to be with the woman, she will ask. Also this he felt put no pressure on the woman and allowed her to control the situation. But here on this desert planet, he only option right now was to go to Mos Eisly and visit The Den of Inequity. The thought sent shudders down his body, he would have to break his code, but there was no help for it.

“Alright Ben, its time to quit being a Jedi and just be a man” he said out loud to himself. Having made his decision, he closed up his home, planning on spending a couple of nights in town, in hopes that he would not have to do this again for a long time to come, he got into his speeder and headed into town.

Unknown to him, the force was not finished with him as a Jedi. The force had a lifetime mission for him.

Note: The incident with the cat and Yoda was based on Jeff Foxworthy's jokes about when his dog umm interrupted him and when he forgot to lock his door.

Sabe’s story to come.
